Éthiopiques Vol. 8

One of my favorites of the Éthiopiques series.  I bought this album a few years back while I was goin through an Ethiopian music phase, mainly due to hearing Mulatu Astatke‘s wonderful music in Broken Flowers.  And then this past Friday, Mulatu/Ethiopian music came up in conversation with Theresa while at the radio show and this album resurfaced into my mind grapes.  Mulatu is not on this compilation but these jams are equally as amazing. Back into the rotation it goes with all it’s swingin funkiness….

Here’s an excerpt from the album notes:
This volume of Éthiopiques aims to collect the clearest examples of soul, R n’B and even twist in the recordings of Ethiopian “sixties”. The quintessences of the most outrageously cosmopolitan styles-yet so firmly anchored in the local soul. Taken together, this collection of pop oddities gives some measure of the ebullience that reigned in Addis Ababa in the 1960’s and until the end of the Empire. Under a regime nearing the end of its line, foundering between its attachment to an antiquated, autocratic order and the upheavals that stem from belonging to a larger world.
